Uche Fuels Dominant Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting very quickly. Without key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable result that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be enough to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, especially following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second game in match.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their league season proved outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee waved away the protests.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
