Just as bad weather tore through the northwest the prior day, Manchester City blew United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three-nil victory for their manager's side due to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their leadership claims as they reinforced their place at the league summit.

Successive Setbacks for United

This scoreline signalled back-to-back Women's Super League defeats for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since last May, placing them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their title hopes severely dented.

United’s capacity to juggle league and continental soccer with a small squad has been a hotly discussed topic since they secured entry to the Champions League. Reviewing the fixture list, it always seemed this was the week that would fully examine this fortitude. Sadly for the visitors, they seemed tired all game, the memorable win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had tried to make changes with a handful of alterations. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added energy, although the omission of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

City, in comparison, have fewer fitness concerns. Andrée Jeglertz made one change from the previous win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from injury.

Dominant First Half

Previously unable to defeat any team who ended above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against Arsenal and United to put them in a strong standing after nine matches.
