A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
