Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Spectators
The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at attendees during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.
“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”

This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
